Checklist of Toxic Exposures – For consideration when writing your child’s timeline.

I have compiled a (non-exhaustive… I am adding new ones all the time!) list of the most common culprits in the health history which should be mentioned during intake.  It is helpful for parents to read and consider when creating a ‘timeline’ of events for their child.

CHECKLIST OF TOXIC EXPOSURES  (also available as an online document)

 

BEFORE PREGNANCY – FATHER AND MOTHER

  • Tropical vaccinations: DTP, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Cholera, Rabies;
  • Malaria prevention (Malarone, Larium)
  • Illnesses that have left a permanent disturbance:  Mononucelosis (Epstein-Barr / Glandular Fever), Lyme, Colitis, Asthma, Epilepsy, Depression, Migraines, Diabetes etc.)
  • Medications
  • Anaesthesia (general / local)
  • Surgery
  • Dental fillings with amalgam (silver fillings – consider whether any dental work was done during or near to pregnancy)
  • Tetanus injection due to deep wounds
  • Hepatitis B vaccine for healthcare workers (or other vaccines due to work, e.g. army / airforce)
  • IVF, IUI, etc: Clomid (Clomifeen), Pregnil (Choriongonadotrofin)
  • Injection between 28-30 weeks with AntiRhesus (D)-Globulin (RhedQuin, Rhogam or Rhophylac)
  • Hydrocortisone creams
  • Cortico steroids
  • Use of recreational drugs: marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy (MDMA), speed (amphetamine), heroine
  • Oral contraceptives, IUD, implant contraceptives
  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol use
  • Environmental exposures:  living near a mining area, radiative exposure, work exposures

 

DURING PREGNANCY

  • IUI, IVF, Clomid, Pregnil, Progesterone, Steroids, other fertility drugs
  • Dental treatment, especially with amalgam fillings involvement.
  • Vaccinations: e.g. Flu, Tetanus, Tropical, any other
  • Mantoux test (to check for infection with TB)
  • Chronic medications: eg. for asthma, diabetes, colitis, epilepsy, anti anxiety, anti depressants, anti psychotics
  • Medication for hypertension
  • Steroids
  • Medication for sexually transmitted diseases
  • Antibiotics of any kind
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Anti-vomiting medication (antiemetics)
  • Antacids: Maalox, Antagel, Ranitidine (aluminiumoxide), Rennies (with 10mg aspartame) etc.
  • Artificial sweeteners: aspartame, chewing gum with aspartame, light-drinks with aspartame
  • Paracetamol 500, containing 40mg asparatame
  • Nasal sprays: Xylomethazolin, Fluticason
  • Vaginal pessaries for candida / yeast infections (canesten, dotrimazol etc.)
  • Oral antifungal tablets for candida / yeast infections
  • Sleeping tablets / sedatives
  • Injections for maturation of lungs where preterm labour occurs (betametason)
  • Contraction inhibitors where labour starts preterm: ritodrinehydrochlorine, nifedipine
  • Vinyl in bedroom, use of cling film to cover food, plastic containers in microwaves
  • Emotional traumas / griefs / events during pregnancy (and any associated medication)
  • Antihistamines
  • Deodorants containing aluminium (most, unless specified)
  • Cooking with aluminium cook-ware
  • Consumption of large quantities of liquorice
  • Consumption of alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Use of recreational drugs (e.g early part of pregnancy before mother knew of pregnancy)
  • Glutamates in food: mononatrium and monokaliumglutamates, MSG.  Present in many canned foods, chinese food, snack foods (e.g. pringles, most fast-food, dressings etc.)

 

DURING DELIVERY

  • Stimulation of contractions: oxytocin / pitocin
  • Pain mediation, morphines
  • Epidural
  • Anaesthetics (general)
  • Sedatives
  • Sleeping pills
  • Antibiotics for strep

 

FIRST 2 YEARS OF CHILD’S LIFE AND OF MOTHER (IF BREAST-FEEDING)

  • Vaccinations:  BCG, Hepatitis B, DTap/HIB/Pneumococcal, MMR, Meningococ-C, DTP, Tropical vaccines, Flu vaccine
  • Pain medication / fever supressants – e.g. Calpol, Tylenol, Ibuprofen etc.
  • Nasal sprays: Xylomethazolin, Fluticason,
  • Cough suppressants: prmethazin
  • Number of rounds of ABX, and which ones they were
  • Anaesthetics, e.g. for grommets, other surgeries
  • Medication for mother during breast feedings, e.g. for mastitis, other infections
  • Dental work of mother during breast feeding (especially where involves amalgam)
  • Warming of baby bottles in microwaves & use of baby formulas; plastic dummies; vinyl in the bedroom; cling film on foods;
  • Reflux medication or vomiting medications
  • Medical investigations using contrast dyes
  • Inhalers (salbutamol and steroid inhalers – blue and brown ones)
  • Anti-diarrhoea medications: loperamide
  • Antacids with aluminium in
  • Plastic constipation preparations (e.g. movicol)
  • Any other medications (e.g. seizure medications)
  • Use of steroids

 

OTHER LIFE EVENTS YOU OR INFORMATION YOU FEEL IS PERTINENT TO YOUR CHILD’S CURRENT HEALTH CONCERNS

 

Please list anything, no matter how inconsequential you may feel it is.  This can be situational, or physical.  Diseases they may have had, traumas they endured etc.  Please add this to your timeline.
